Difficulties in learning English by the students in Indonesia
Abstract
This research was to know the difficulties student in learning English in Indonesia the objectifies of this research are to know the students’ difficulties in learning English for examples : seemed from their environment , their difficulties in study grammar, feel shy in study English, the vocabulary they have, lazy in study English, teachers’ skill in teaching English for students, the simple thinking of students in learning English, the commitment’s students etc. and to know students’ ability in learning English .
Key word : environment, , difficulties in study grammar, shy, vocabulary have, lazy , teachers’ skill, the simple thinking, the commitment’s students.
Introduction
One of important languages is English. English also is an international language that used by other people in some countries in this world especially in Indonesia. Although not all of Indonesian can use English but English is very important in school, university and also in some working places they should be able know and understand about English and to get the scholarship to other countries we should be able to speak English.
According to English curriculum, the goal of teaching English is to make students have competency in four language skills namely listening, speaking, reading, and writing. In other words students are expected to be able to use English both in spoken and written form. And the students are hoped to express their ideas and feeling actively in English.
Language if looked from kamus besar bahasa Indonesia have three definition they are,:’’ (1)sound symbol system articulated that arbitrary and conventional that used as communication tool to born the feeling and thinking ; (2) conversation (saying) that used a nation (ethnic, country, region, etc); polite conversation(saying) , good attitude;’’( kamus besar bahasa Indonesia, national education department,2008). From that definition clear that language has an important role as a communication tool. Two persons or more will be able deliver what there are in their thinking and feeling easily ef delivered by language. Nevertheless they can use language can communicate well because types of language , structure, sound, stress, intonation, etc that also influence the communication.
Development and mastering technology have forced the international agreed to use standard language that used in every country that is English. Almost in every country agreed that international language is English. This case be a phenomena of Indonesian where English come into the subject that disliked and difficult for students from elementary school till high education. Actually they want to mastery English but then appear the other problem in study or mastering English
The methodology of research
The population of this research was researched from all of students in Indonesia
This sample of this research was representative from some students in this country.
Discussion
Studying English for almost people especially for students is very difficult caused some factors from www.data4sukses and www.sekolahoke.com we got some that restrict student in studying English they are: environment, grammar/structure, shy, lazy in studying, less mastery in vocabulary, low in focus, nothing to commitment, etc . This article will explain one by one about factors that can restrict the students in studying English.
First is about environment, environment is very support to develop our English mastery. For example the environment in England and united state America {U.S.A} they can speak and mastery English well certainly, because when the people there still in the childhood they have used English. This case different with some countries or places that the environment is not English area, it is so difficult that people or children, especially students in Indonesia they can not speak and mastery English because they have not been usual to use it.
Second is grammar/structure. For the beginners or students use English with the grammar and structure is very difficult this problem often make them lazy to study till they do not want to study about English. Actually they began to study English to master it with full spirit but when they know about the difficult of grammar or structure of English then many of them are give up.
Third is someone feels shy. Shy in study especially in studying and mastering English that should need many practices is bad problem because it can make the ability or the understanding of students in mastering English is rather not useful although she or he know much about vocabulary but, if they shy to speak English their knowledge and ability will not develop. And finally this problem make the students mastery English well.
The next factor is student lazy to study. In this world lazy same with can not, the past people era had had a good spirit to study, no day without study for them but that situation is very different with this era, in the era that everything modern and every thing there are here and this case make the young generation are lazy to do something and lazy to study this one of problem that can restrict students in mastering English.
Then students have low vocabulary. One of components in English is vocabulary, the words or vocabularies that should be had by students at least 500 word or more to master English. Actually students should memorize vocabulary 3-5 words per day nevertheless they are too hard and lazy to memorize it. So how students can master English well if they do not have many English vocabularies?
There are many subject in English, so those make the student can not focus in studying English. In English we should master about reading, writing, listening, speaking, pronunciation, grammar, etc. this make the student can not focus what subject that must be learnt first and also student sc an not be patient to master all of aspect s of English .
Students have no commitment. There are many students lazy in studying English because this is a difficult subject that have many aspects should be learnt, so when they study English they study it in moody because many of them do not have a good commitment in study English.
The simple thinking of students in studying English. The Students out side England or united state America especially Indonesia feel English not very important to used because English is not mother tongue , they are always thinking that ”speak our mother tongue is haven not yet able why we must study about other language” then the interest student to study English be low.
Many students do not thinking about the importance thing in the future. English is the important thing that very useful in the future, but they do not know about it and do not think about it. then they do not want or lazy to study English more. They think it useless in this country because many people do not use it to communicate in their daily activity. And also, they think it is too hard to use because it is not their mother-tongue of country.
The last factor of impede in studying English, the skill of teacher in teaching English that rather good and competent . many teacher do not know about emotional and psychology of student, then teacher can not give the good motivation to student to study English. It because some teacher do not have many experience in learning teaching. The also can not use the good strategy in learning teaching that can make student is not interest and so boring. The teacher skill to make student interest is not good, and some teacher do not care about the student that not interest to learn English.
Conclusion
The teachers should be a key in students’ study and must give the good influence for student then it can give the good motivation for student in studying English. They should give more attention to the student that has low skill and not interesting for English.
